Enhancing Renewable Energy with Advanced Battery Storage

In today’s renewable energy landscape, batteries and energy storage systems (BESS) are indispensable, especially for large-scale solar and wind farms. These systems stabilize energy supply during low production periods, ensuring a consistent and reliable flow of power. By storing excess energy generated during peak times, BESS allows renewable sources to deliver electricity even when sunlight or wind is unavailable. This integration not only boosts the overall efficiency and viability of renewable projects but also plays a crucial role in the transition toward sustainable energy solutions.

Pioneering the First BESS Project in Cyprus

In the winter of 2021, our electrical design firm embarked on a groundbreaking project in Cyprus—the design and development of the first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Athienou substation. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 77440, this project aimed to enhance the flexibility of smart power grids by improving storage systems and leveraging renewable energy sources. This initiative underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and supporting innovative infrastructure projects.

The project involved the meticulous design and construction of a 40-foot HQ ISO Container tailored to house the BESS components. This container expertly accommodated 26 battery racks, achieving a total power capacity of 1 MW and an impressive energy capacity of 2 MWh. Inside, the racks held 286 battery modules and 26 switchgear units connected to a low-voltage system. The entire setup was powered by a 1.2 MVA outdoor oil transformer with a Δ-Δ configuration, operating at 22/11 kV and 0.45 kV.

Our team ensured that every aspect of the BESS was designed for optimal performance and reliability. From selecting high-quality materials to overseeing the precise installation of each component, we delivered a robust system capable of meeting the demanding needs of modern power grids.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is composed of advanced Lithium-ion batteries, which are widely recognized for their efficiency and effectiveness in energy storage applications.

All components of the Battery Energy Storage System are installed and integrated inside a 40ft ISO shipping container.

Two HVAC units installed to manage climate control in the container, ensuring optimal temperature and humidity.

The BESS contains a Fire Fighting System, specifically the aerosol type called FirePro, featuring both automatic and manual detection and extinguishing capabilities.

The system includes 1 HMI Panel, 1 local PLC Beckhoff for FEC - AEMS, and an additional first-level PLC Beckhoff.

All battery modules have fans powered by the low voltage (LV) panel for ventilation and temperature control.

BESS is connected to the MV utility grid using a 1.2 MVA outdoor oil transformer with a Δ-Δ configuration and voltage levels of 22/11kV to 0.45kV.

The AC connection between the PCS and AC Panel uses four 240 mm² cables per phase, routed through a metallic cable tray along the container's wall and ceiling.

A double earth ring was used for grounding all equipment inside the container. Said ring then was connected to the substation general earthing grid.
